Traditional Sew-In Aftercare: First 2 Weeks (Wash, Sweat, Swim) + professional hair color tips
By Slaybyvashae Bundles and Styles | July 14, 2026

The most important rule for your Traditional Sew-In is simple: keep it dry for the first 24 to 48 hours so the thread can settle and your braid base stays secure. One client told us her tracks were “flat, undetectable” with “lots of body”, and that result lasts longer when you don’t rush the wash. If you’re in Avondale and you’re dealing with heat, commutes, kids, and real life, this two-week plan keeps your install looking fresh without babying it.
First 24 to 48 hours: protect the braid base and your leave-out
You just invested the time. Our Traditional Sew-In appointment is about 210 minutes and includes shampoo, deep conditioning, hot oil, and a trim, so you’re starting clean and prepped.
- Do not wash, wet, or submerge the install for 24 to 48 hours. That includes long showers where steam hits your scalp.
- Skip heavy sweating for 72 hours if you can. In West Avondale near W Bermuda Drive, the heat plus a hot car ride can turn “a little sweat” into a whole scalp soak fast.
- Hands off the braid base. No scratching with nails, no picking, no aggressive brushing near the roots.
- If anything feels too tight or you feel sharp pulling at your edges, let us know right away. We’d rather adjust early than have you pushing through discomfort.
And yes, you can still look cute in this window. Tie your hair down at night and keep your leave-out smooth with light tension only. Your goal is simple: set the foundation so the rest of the two weeks are easy.
Week 1 in Avondale heat: sweat control without messing up your install
Week one is where most sew-ins either stay “flat and undetectable” or start lifting at the base. If you’re commuting past the retail strips around West Avondale, running errands, or working shifts, sweat and friction are usually the two troublemakers.
If you have to work out
We generally recommend low-sweat workouts for the first few days. Think walks, light weights, or anything that doesn’t have your scalp dripping. If you do sweat, blot at the roots with a clean towel, then let your scalp air out. Don’t wrap damp hair tight.
Keep your edges and leave-out calm
Avoid tight ponytails, slick-backs, or anything that pulls on the hairline. We’ve had clients come to us with damaged hair and leave with a safer install plan that helped them grow it back, and edges are a big part of that. Give yours a break in week one.
Arizona tip: July monsoon dust is real. If your scalp feels gritty after being outside, do a quick fresh-water rinse on the outer hair and gently dry. Save the full wash for wash day so you don’t keep soaking the braid base.
Wash day (week 1 or 2): the “diluted shampoo” method that keeps wefts smooth
After your 24 to 48 hour wait, plan to wash every 1 to 2 weeks. If you had hair salon hair color done with your install, gentle washing matters even more because you want your color and your leave-out to stay soft, not dry and puffy.
Here’s how we like you to wash a Traditional Sew-In
- Mix a sulfate-free shampoo with water in an applicator bottle. Diluted shampoo spreads easier and helps you avoid rough scrubbing.
- Apply it to the braid base in sections. Use your fingertips to massage, not your nails.
- Rinse longer than you think you need to. Leftover shampoo at the base is a common reason people end up itchy.
- Condition the lengths, not the roots. Heavy conditioner at the braid base can cause build-up and a funky smell fast.
- Dry fully. Air-dry is fine if you have the time. If you don’t, use a blow-dryer on low to medium heat and focus on getting the braid base dry first.
Detangle with a soft-bristle brush or a wide-tooth comb, and keep it on the extensions only. Your leave-out gets its own gentle brush session.
Swimming and lake days: the 2 to 4 week rule (and what to do if you can’t skip it)
We generally recommend waiting 2 to 4 weeks before swimming. Pool chlorine and lake water love to sit in that braid base. That’s when installs start feeling heavy, tangly, and hard to dry.
- If you must swim: wet your hair with fresh water first. Hair that’s already wet absorbs less chlorine and lake water.
- Use a light leave-in detangler on the lengths only. Keep the roots clean and light.
- Rinse immediately after swimming and plan a proper cleanse soon after. Don’t let it “dry in” at the base.
- Dry thoroughly. A damp sew-in can smell fast in Arizona heat, especially after a hot drive home.
If you’re unsure, ask us before your weekend. We’ll tell you the simplest plan for your exact install and your schedule.
Maintenance checks every 6 to 8 weeks, plus the “reach out now” signs
A Traditional Sew-In is protective when it’s installed safely and maintained on time. That’s why we recommend a maintenance check every 6 to 8 weeks. If you’re in Avondale, Goodyear, Litchfield Park, Tolleson, Phoenix, or Glendale, we can keep you on a schedule that makes sense without you guessing.

What’s normal vs. what needs a quick message
- Normal: mild scalp tightness the first day, especially if you’re not used to protective styles.
- Reach out: sharp pain, bumps, constant headache, or edges that feel like they’re pulling. Don’t wait it out.
- Normal: a little frizz on the leave-out as it adjusts to humidity changes.
- Reach out: lifting tracks, visible thread, or a wet smell that won’t go away after drying.
If you’re planning hair salon hair color around your sew-in, tell us your timeline. We’ll keep your leave-out and extensions in mind so your blend stays realistic.

Need us? If something feels off, send a message and we’ll help you fix it fast. If everything feels great, we’ll see you around that 6 to 8 week mark for maintenance so your install stays neat and your natural hair stays protected.
